Referee Question

by af5ive 289 days ago

Say you are refereeing a U14 game and the blue team has 9 players. The red team has 11, but decides to only play with 9. If a player from the red team is sent off do they finish the half playing with 8 or are they allowed to add a player? Or do they have to wait until half to add a player? Or must they finish the game playing with 8?

I would suspect that the team that chose to play with nine did so as a courtesy to the opposition who did not have a full team, and adding a player would be no different to having that same player arrive late - John Norton would be the best person to answer that from the rules standpoint.
Steve and Detlef are correct. The red team could increase their players at any time (up to 10 once the ejection occurred) - they do not have to wait until half-time. John Norton (PCJSL Ref Commissioner)

Steve and Detlef are both correct. The red team could increase their numbers off the bench as long as they did not exceed 10 after the ejection. They could bring the player(s) in immediately and not have to wait until half time. John Norton (PCJSL - Ref Commissioner)

At U14 the standard play is 11 v 11. As long as you have 7 legal players available, the game may be played. If you choose to play with less, you can return to the full number at your regular substitution, or with the referees permission. If a red card is issued per your example, you may finish the game with 10 players max.
